Eligibility criteria

This fellowship is intended to fund Black-identifying students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree (Master’s or PhD) in genetics, genetic counseling, and/or other genetics-related fields such as bioinformatics .

Students must be currently enrolled or enrolled by Fall semester 2024 in a undergraduate or graduate degree in the United States. For the purposes of this fellowship, awarded fellows must be U.S. citizens attending a university in the United States.

Applicants should remain full-time students with at least 2 semesters remaining to complete their program at the time of application submission.

Provisions of the award

Black In Genetics will award one graduate student and one undergraduate student with the following:

  • $5,000 of funding will be provided to help with scientific development of each fellow. This is intended to cover expenses including, but not limited to tuition, conference fees and travel, and research equipment (including personal laptops and external hard drives for data storage).

  • One-on-one mentorship will be provided to build relationships with scientists across genetics fields.

  • Fellows will be invited to participate in all BIG activities, including workshops, seminars, and conferences.

Application Materials

Applicants should submit the following materials through the submission form by June 7th, 2024:

  • Proof of enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program (Masters, PhD) (this can be in the form of an unofficial transcript, a letter from the applicant's advisor or department chair, or enrollment letter from the university registrar)

  • A 1 page statement of purpose describing the applicant’s career aspirations and how this award would help them achieve those goals

  • A 1 page statement of community involvement that articulates the applicant’s dedication to service and ways they have demonstrated leadership in their community.

  • List of applicant’s community service activities

  • At least one letter of recommendation (up to 2 allowed)

    • Letters of recommendation should be sent to info@blackingenetics.com. Note that we will require letters be emailed from the recommenders directly. We will not accept letters sent to us from applicants’ emails.
